Ohhhh doing washes of color at low opacity sounds like it could work, and I know a couple of the painters I follow do that with their digital stuff... I might give it a shot next time I try something like this again, I know I'm HIDEOUSLY IMPATIENT when I do art so I need to force myself to slow down and try things even if I'm not instantly amazing at them.
(My comfort zone is pinky on the Alt key for eyedropping and 100% opacity painbrushes because I like to live on the edge I guess, but I lose a lot of the really soft lighting that I desire muchly to emulate, so BACK TO THE ARTING BOARD IT IS, I GUESS.)
